Summary: Resisting scientific, legal and political challenges, farmers and ranchers still use large amounts of antibiotics in raising livestock, which breeds and passes to humans drug-resistant bacteria.
Reporting Process: The debate surrounding antibiotic resistance caused by the routine use of common antibiotics in livestock is not new. Whether the threat is real, the topic has garnered decades of national media attention, attracted millions of dollars in political contributions and pitted key industry players against one another. The reporter says the biggest challenge was presenting a fresh story while avoiding a ‘he-said, she-said’ piece because so few in the agriculture and scientific communities agree on anything. The more he reported on the issue, the less clear it became who was right. At the end of this project, I’m left with one certainty: In the future, the debate over antibiotics in livestock will only get more intense as word gets out.
